The Tower's real, 540-year-old guard tradition is one of its most genuinely iconic details. The Yeomen Warders — nicknamed Beefeaters, with no fully agreed-upon origin for the name, though a daily meat ration for their service is the leading theory — were formed in 1485 by Henry VII after the Battle of Bosworth, originally as the king's personal bodyguard. When Henry VIII later moved his main residence elsewhere, forty Warders stayed behind to guard the Tower and its prisoners, a role that, in modified form, continues today.
To actually become a Yeoman Warder now, a candidate needs at least 22 years of service in the British armed forces, the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and warrant officer rank or above — a genuinely demanding bar that keeps the role tightly tied to real military service. There are 27 Warders today, a number unchanged for generations, and they've led guided tours of the Tower since the Victorian era.
Beyond the Warders, the fortress itself remains genuinely iconic for reasons that go back centuries — it's one of the best-preserved Norman castles in Britain, and its real role across nearly 1,000 years as palace, prison, treasury, and armoury gives a private guide plenty of authentic ground to cover in this focused tour.
