The Great Fire of London in 1666 destroyed a huge share of the City's older buildings, so many pubs rebuilt immediately afterward on sites with genuinely medieval cellars or foundations underneath — a pattern you'll see repeated across several of the City's most historic pubs.

About This Tour
A private tour for your group only — real historic London pubs, with genuine included drinks. This is a private tour for your group only. Real historic London pubs are visited, with genuine included drinks at each stop.
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, one of the City of London's most storied surviving pubs, has vaulted cellars dating to the 13th century, when the building served as a guest house belonging to a Carmelite monastery — giving it a genuine claim to being among London's oldest drinking establishments, even though the pub above ground was rebuilt after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Its low beams and cramped, maze-like rooms later drew a remarkable list of regulars, including Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and, generations later, Winston Churchill.
The Great Fire of 1666 is, in fact, the reason so many of London's "historic" pubs share a similar rebuilt-in-the-1660s-70s story — the fire destroyed roughly 13,200 houses and a huge share of the City's older buildings, so pubs claiming genuine medieval cellars beneath a post-Fire upper structure, as the Cheshire Cheese does, are a real and recognizable pattern across the City rather than a one-off.
Real drinks included at every stop mean the tour covers this history at an unhurried pace rather than rushing between pubs purely to tick off addresses.
