About This Tour

A private walking tour for your group only — real London highlights, covered on foot over a genuine comprehensive route. This is a private walking tour for your group only. Real London highlights are covered on foot, over a genuinely comprehensive route.

On foot, Trafalgar Square rewards a proper look rather than a passing glance. Nelson's Column, honoring Admiral Horatio Nelson's decisive 1805 victory (and death) at the Battle of Trafalgar, took three years to build starting in 1840 and stands just under 52 metres tall — but its four famous bronze lions weren't added until 1867, more than two decades after the column itself was finished. They were sculpted by Edwin Landseer, better known as an animal painter who'd never sculpted before; he reportedly studied the anatomy of a decomposing lion carcass from London Zoo to get the proportions right, and used his own dog's paws as a model for the lions' feet.

A walking format means your guide can actually stop at the square rather than just point from a moving vehicle — the kind of detail (the bronze relief panels around the column's base, cast from captured French cannon, depicting Nelson's major battles) that's easy to miss from a cab window but obvious once you're standing in front of it.
