Camden's market district sits on ground that spent most of the 19th century as an industrial zone of warehouses and gin distilleries clustered around Camden Lock — a working, unglamorous waterside district that only became the market area it is today starting on 30 March 1974, when a small Sunday crafts fair with just 16 traders set up near the lock. It's since grown into the fourth most-visited attraction in London, drawing an estimated 250,000 visitors a week to what's now a sprawling complex of market halls rather than the single small stall row it started as.
Covent Garden, covered the same day, carries a genuinely older and more formal history — its market traces to 1654, when the Earl of Bedford permitted open-air stalls on land that had been a Westminster Abbey kitchen garden since the year 1200, and the grand neo-classical market hall that gives the Piazza its current look was designed by Charles Fowler in 1828, decades before Camden's market existed in any form.
