Hever Castle's walls date back to 1270, but its most famous chapter began in 1462, when Geoffrey Boleyn bought the castle and built a comfortable Tudor manor house inside the older fortified walls. By Henry VIII's reign, the castle belonged to Geoffrey's grandson, Sir Thomas Boleyn — and it was there that young Anne Boleyn, Thomas's daughter, spent much of her childhood, and where Henry VIII later courted her before she became his second wife and, eventually, queen for roughly 1,000 days.
The castle's current look owes almost as much to the 20th century as the 16th. American businessman William Waldorf Astor bought Hever in the early 1900s and poured real money and imagination into restoring it — commissioning the mock-Tudor 'Astor Village' (still called the Astor Wing today) and building the extensive gardens and lake visitors walk through now. The Astor family held the castle until around 1983.
