Much of central London's "haunted pub" reputation traces back to genuinely verifiable history rather than invented spookiness: the sheer density of centuries-old buildings here means a disproportionate number of pubs sit on or near old plague burial grounds, Civil War skirmish sites, or buildings gutted and rebuilt after the Great Fire of London in 1666 — real layers of difficult history that folklore has, over time, wrapped ghost stories around.
