Because it genuinely is — Henry VIII's Tudor palace (taken from Cardinal Wolsey in 1529) survives alongside a later Baroque wing that William III and Mary II commissioned from Christopher Wren in the 1690s, who never got to finish his original, more ambitious plan.

About This Tour

A private tour for your group only — real Tudor and Baroque history, covering both Henry VIII's and William III's genuine palace additions. This is a private tour for your group only. Real Tudor and Baroque history is covered, spanning both Henry VIII's original palace and William III's genuine later additions.

Hampton Court genuinely tells two very different royal stories side by side. The Tudor half dates to Henry VIII, who took the palace from Cardinal Wolsey in 1529 and expanded it into one of his favourite residences — the Great Hall and Tudor kitchens from that era still survive largely intact.

More than 150 years later, King William III and Queen Mary II wanted their own English version of Versailles, and commissioned Sir Christopher Wren to rebuild the palace in the fashionable Baroque style. Wren's original plan called for demolishing almost the entire Tudor building, but the scheme was repeatedly scaled back for cost — sparing the Great Hall and Chapel Royal — so what survives today is a genuine architectural patchwork of both eras, not a single unified design.

Work on Wren's Baroque wing stalled for three years after Mary II's sudden death from smallpox in 1694, then resumed under his deputy William Talman, and stopped again for good after William III's own death in 1702 — meaning the Baroque side of the palace, including Fountain Court and the formal gardens, was never fully finished to Wren's original ambition. A 3-hour format gives real time to walk both eras side by side and see exactly where Tudor meets Baroque.
