Hampton Court didn't start as a royal palace at all — Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Henry VIII's chief minister, took over the site in 1514 and spent a genuinely enormous sum, around 200,000 crowns, over the following seven years building what was meant to be the finest private residence in England.
Wolsey didn't get to keep it. By 1529, after failing to secure the Pope's approval for Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, Wolsey handed the palace over to the king in a last attempt to save his own position — it didn't work, and Wolsey died before he could even be tried. Henry, already fond of the location, enlarged the palace further to suit his own sizeable royal court.
