Greenwich's real claim to global significance isn't royal at all — it's scientific. Charles II founded the Royal Observatory here, and in 1884 an international conference formally agreed that the line running through it would be the world's Prime Meridian, the zero-degree reference point for global longitude and time that's still used today.
Just down the hill, the Old Royal Naval College was designed by Sir Christopher Wren (the same architect behind St Paul's Cathedral and part of Hampton Court's Baroque wing) and completed in 1759. Its Painted Hall, with ceiling artwork often compared to the Sistine Chapel, was originally built as a dining hall for the Royal Naval Hospital that occupied the site until 1869.
Moored nearby, the Cutty Sark is a genuine 19th-century tea clipper — one of the fastest sailing ships of her era, built for the China tea trade before steam power made sail obsolete, and now preserved on permanent public display. Together, these real sites earned Maritime Greenwich its UNESCO World Heritage status, and a dedicated private driver means the whole borough can be explored at a pace that's genuinely yours, not a fixed group schedule.
