About This Tour
A private walking tour for your group only — real Charles Dickens history, including genuine inspiration sites for A Christmas Carol. This is a private walking tour for your group only. Real Charles Dickens history is traced, including genuine sites that inspired A Christmas Carol.
Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in just six weeks in the autumn of 1843, reportedly drawing inspiration from the people and streets he walked through on long nighttime walks across London.
Several real locations have been identified with the story. Scrooge's counting house is generally placed on Newman's Court, off Cornhill in the City of London, with the "ancient tower" of the church glimpsed from his window identified as St Michael, Cornhill, almost directly across the road. Candidates for Scrooge's tavern cluster around the same area, including Garraway's and the George and Vulture in St Michael's Alley.
The famous doorknocker that Scrooge sees as Marley's face is said to have been inspired by a particularly grotesque specimen Dickens spotted on Craven Street, off the Strand. Bob Cratchit's house is placed in Camden Town — a detail with an extra layer, since Dickens himself lived at that same property as a child.
