The City of London began life as a Roman trading port on the Thames, founded around 47-50 CE and defended from roughly 200 AD by the London Wall. The modern "Square Mile" nickname is literal — the City covers about 1.12 square miles, and its Roman-era boundaries still largely trace the edge of the area today.
It's been administered separately from the rest of London since 886 AD, when Alfred the Great appointed his son-in-law, Earl Æthelred of Mercia, as its governor — making it one of the longest-running pieces of continuous civic administration anywhere in the country.
Through the 19th century, the City was the world's primary business centre, and it still carries that weight today: roughly 7,000 people actually live within its boundaries, against more than 316,000 who work there, overwhelmingly in financial services — a daily population swing a rooftop view makes genuinely visible.
