The Cabinet War Rooms became fully operational on 27 August 1939 — just a week before Britain declared war on Germany — after a team led by Sir Leslie Hollis spent the previous year converting the underground space into a working command centre. When Churchill first visited as the newly appointed Prime Minister in May 1940, he reportedly told the room, 'This is the room from which I will direct the war.'
At the heart of the complex, the Map Room ran around the clock, staffed continuously by army, navy, and air force officers tracking everything from convoy positions to front-line intelligence, and producing daily summaries for Churchill, the King, and the military chiefs. It stayed staffed right through to Japan's surrender in August 1945, never once going dark across the entire war.
Real, exclusive access to this underground complex — paired with genuine context on wartime London above ground — gives a private group time to take in just how much coordination ran through this single, unassuming space for the full length of the war, rather than treating it as a quick wartime curiosity.
