About This Tour
A private walking tour for your group only, led by a real Londoner — genuine, seasonal Christmas lights displays. This is a private walking tour for your group only, led by a real Londoner. Genuine, seasonal Christmas lights displays are the focus. This tour runs during the real holiday season only.
London's Christmas lights tradition is younger than it looks — it only began on Regent Street in 1954, as a deliberate statement that post-war London didn't have to look grey heading into the holidays, with Oxford Street following in 1959.
The lights disappeared for a long stretch too: central London mostly scrapped its displays from the late 1960s through the late 1970s, before Oxford Street brought them back in 1978 with a Star Wars-inspired laser show that had nothing to do with the Dickensian imagery most visitors now expect.
These days, the major West End streets switch their lights on during the first two weeks of November, and a guide walking the route on foot, rather than from a cab window, can duck down the quieter side streets between the big displays — the kind of detail that only really works at walking pace.
