Winston Churchill bought Chartwell in September 1922 and kept it as his main home for over 40 years, right up until shortly before his death in January 1965. Through the 1930s especially — a period when Churchill was out of political office — the house became the real centre of his world: he wrote speeches and books in his study, entertained allies at his dining table while campaigning against appeasement, and spent hours in the garden building walls and digging lakes by hand.
Churchill nearly lost the house. In 1946, financial pressure forced him to consider selling, and the National Trust stepped in only because a group of his friends, led by Lord Camrose, raised the money to buy it on the condition that the Churchills could keep living there for life. After Winston's death, his wife Clementine gave up that right, and the Trust opened Chartwell to the public as a museum in 1966.
What makes a visit genuinely personal rather than just historical is how little has been rearranged — the rooms remain close to how Churchill actually left them, and the house holds the largest collection of his own paintings anywhere, giving a real look at the private side of a public figure most visitors only know from speeches and wartime photographs.
