Canterbury Cathedral's roots go back to 597, when the missionary Augustine arrived from Rome to convert the English and established his seat within the old Roman city walls. Its single most consequential moment, though, came centuries later: on 29 December 1170, four knights acting on an offhand remark by King Henry II — "Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?" — murdered Archbishop Thomas Becket at the cathedral's altar. Becket was canonized just three years later, and the shrine that grew up around his tomb made Canterbury one of medieval Europe's great pilgrimage destinations, until Henry VIII had it destroyed in 1540.
Leeds Castle, in Kent, earned its enduring nickname "the Ladies Castle" for having been the residence of six medieval queens of England, beginning life in AD 857 as a Saxon manor before being rebuilt as a proper Norman castle around 1119. When it passed to King Edward I and Queen Eleanor of Castile in 1278, the royal pair added the Gloriette, glazed windows, and one of the earliest bathhouses in England — much of it still standing today, built across two small islands in a lake formed by the River Len.
Dover Castle, which closes out the day, has been called the "Key to England" for its strategic command of the shortest crossing to mainland Europe. The castle visible today dates mainly to Henry II's building campaign of 1179-89, though evidence of fortification on this chalk headland stretches back to the Iron Age, and a genuine network of tunnels beneath the castle served as a real wartime command centre during the Battle of Britain.
