Covent Garden's name itself is a clue to its age: the Abbot of Westminster walled off roughly 40 acres here as a kitchen garden for Westminster Abbey's convent as early as 1200, which is where "Convent Garden" — later softened to Covent Garden — comes from. A proper market followed centuries later, starting informally in 1654 when the Earl of Bedford allowed open-air fruit and vegetable stalls on the site, formalized with a daily trading licence by 1670, and finally rebuilt into the grand neo-classical market building still standing today, designed by Charles Fowler in 1828. The fruit, flower, and vegetable trade itself only moved out to Nine Elms in 1974, after three centuries on this exact spot.
Camden Market, by contrast, is a relative newcomer — founded on 30 March 1974 as a small Sunday crafts fair with just 16 original traders, in an area that spent the 19th century as an industrial zone of warehouses and gin distilleries. It's grown since into one of London's most-visited attractions, pulling in roughly 250,000 visitors a week.
Borough Market rounds out the trio with the deepest roots of all three — a market on this exact Southwark site since at least the 12th century, and by the market's own account since 1014, making today's stalls a genuinely unbroken continuation of over a thousand years of London trading rather than a modern recreation.
