About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, reached by real train — Cambridge's genuine historic university city. This is a private tour for your group only, reached by real train from London. Cambridge's genuine historic university city, including its real colleges, is explored.

Peterhouse, founded in 1284 by Hugo de Balsham, Bishop of Ely, is generally recognized as Cambridge's oldest college, but it's King's College — founded in 1441 by Henry VI, barely a year after the same king founded Eton College as its sister institution — that produces the skyline most people picture when they think of Cambridge. Work on King's College Chapel began in 1446 but wasn't actually finished until 1544, during Henry VIII's reign, nearly a century after it was started, and the result is now considered one of the finest examples of late Gothic English architecture anywhere.

The chapel's fan-vaulted ceiling is the largest of its kind in the world, and every Christmas Eve its choir — made up of King's College students and choristers from the adjoining King's College School — performs the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, broadcast to millions of listeners around the globe, a tradition that has run since 1918.

Reaching Cambridge by train rather than coach also happens to be the genuinely faster, more comfortable route from London — real scenic rail travel rather than motorway time, leaving more of the day free to actually walk the colleges.
