The Rosetta Stone, the museum's single most-requested artifact, wasn't actually found by the British at all — it was uncovered in July 1799 by a French army engineer, Pierre-François Bouchard, during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, built into a fort wall near the town of Rosetta. France's Egyptian campaign collapsed shortly after, and the stone passed to British hands under the 1801 surrender terms, arriving at the museum by 1802.
What makes it genuinely historic isn't just its age — carved in 196 BC — but that the same decree is inscribed in three scripts: hieroglyphics, Demotic Egyptian, and ancient Greek. That overlap gave scholars Thomas Young and Jean-François Champollion the key to finally cracking hieroglyphic writing, a breakthrough completed in 1822.
