The British Museum's own origin story is a good one for kids — it was founded in 1753 by an Act of Parliament, built almost entirely on the collection of one man, the physician and naturalist Sir Hans Sloane. Over his lifetime Sloane gathered more than 71,000 objects, and rather than let the collection be broken up after his death, he left it to the nation (King George II, specifically) in exchange for a one-time payment to his heirs.
It opened to the public on 15 January 1759, making it the world's first national public museum — and notably, it was free to enter from day one, a policy that still holds true today, over 265 years later.
