About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, aboard a real London black taxi — genuine city landmarks, in a distinctly London style. This is a private tour for your group only, aboard a real London black taxi. Genuine city landmarks are covered in this distinctly London style of touring.

Tower Bridge is one of the landmarks this route is built around, and it's worth a second look beyond the photo: it opened on 30 June 1894, after eight years of construction, in a ceremony led by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Its two bascules — the lifting sections in the middle — weigh over 1,000 tons apiece and were engineered to counterbalance each other so they could be raised to 83 degrees in roughly five minutes, originally using steam-powered hydraulics. The bridge still opens for river traffic today, just on an electro-hydraulic system installed in 1972 rather than the Victorian original.

It's a useful landmark for understanding London's layout from a cab window too — the Tower of London sits right beside it, and the two together mark where the historic City of London gives way to the East End, a boundary your driver can point out as you cross.
