About This Tour
A private photoshoot for your group only, with a real professional photographer — genuine Big Ben and Westminster backdrops. This is a private photoshoot for your group only, with a real professional photographer. Genuine Big Ben and Westminster backdrops make for iconic photos.
What's popularly called Big Ben is really the Elizabeth Tower — built as part of Charles Barry's design for a new Palace of Westminster, after fire destroyed the old one on 16 October 1834. Construction on the tower began on 28 September 1843 and finished nearly 16 years later, on 31 May 1859.
The tower stands 316 feet (96m) tall, with 334 steps up to the belfry across 11 floors. When its clock was completed, it was the largest and most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world — a record that held for a long time.
For more than 150 years it was known simply as the Clock Tower. It wasn't renamed Elizabeth Tower until 2012, to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee — meaning most of the photographs taken here over the last century and a half were technically shot at a building with a different name than the one it has today.
