The Abbey Road crossing is the obvious centerpiece, and the real story behind the photograph is worth knowing before you stand on it. On the morning of 8 August 1969, photographer Iain MacMillan had exactly ten minutes to shoot the cover for what would become the Beatles' Abbey Road album. A police officer briefly held traffic while MacMillan, balanced on a stepladder in the middle of the road, took six frames of the band crossing — the fifth one, with John Lennon leading and Ringo Starr in the rear, became one of the most reproduced album covers in music history.
Savile Row carries an equally real piece of Beatles history: on 30 January 1969, the band climbed onto the roof of the Apple Corps headquarters at 3 Savile Row and played live in public for the last time as a group. The unannounced concert ran for 42 minutes before London police, responding to noise complaints from the surrounding business district, shut it down — footage of officers climbing the stairs mid-performance ended up in the Let It Be documentary. It remains the final time all four Beatles performed together.
