About This Tour

Avebury holds a genuinely unique distinction among Britain's prehistoric monuments: it's the only known stone circle in the world with a living village built inside it, and public roads now run directly through the ancient henge and stone circle itself — a working village layered onto a Neolithic monument rather than fenced off from it. The site also happens to dwarf its far more famous neighbor: Avebury's outer circle is roughly 14 times larger in area than Stonehenge, enclosing some 28.5 acres within a henge whose ditch originally ran 30 feet deep.
Bath's own Roman history runs just as deep. The bathing complex built up around its naturally hot spring from around AD 60-70 functioned for close to three centuries as both a working bathhouse and a major pilgrimage site across the western Roman Empire, dedicated to the hybrid goddess Sulis Minerva.
The Cotswolds close the loop with honey-stone villages built from the same locally quarried limestone that gives the whole region its distinctive color, a landscape shaped as much by the medieval wool trade as by geology.
