Avebury and Stonehenge were jointly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, but Avebury is, by most measures, the far larger and less restricted of the two — its stone circles are recognized as the largest in Britain, enclosing roughly 28.5 acres inside a henge whose ditch originally plunged some 30 feet deep with an 18-foot mound alongside it. Unlike Stonehenge, where the stones themselves are roped off, Avebury's stones stand in open fields that visitors can walk among freely, at any hour, for free.
That open access is exactly what makes a genuine sunrise visit possible here in a way it simply isn't at Stonehenge: real early-morning light across the stones, with none of the midday coach-tour crowds, followed by champagne to mark the occasion — a distinctly different, quieter encounter with the same Neolithic landscape that shaped Stonehenge a few miles away.
