Part of what makes an open-top vintage vehicle such a genuinely good way to see Lisbon is the city's real, distinctive street surface: calçada portuguesa, the hand-laid black-and-white limestone and basalt pavement found throughout the historic center. Its most famous example, the wave-patterned design in Rossio Square, dates to 1848 and was laid within six years of an earlier calçada project at São Jorge Castle — a pattern meant to evoke the ocean, a direct nod to Portugal's seafaring history. That same cobbled surface, combined with Lisbon's genuinely steep, narrow hillside streets, is exactly the terrain a classic convertible Jeep is suited to cover comfortably, in a way a full-size coach simply can't.
