This tour is led by Mauro, a real, independent local guide who was born and raised in Sintra and has spent twelve years guiding visitors through the town he grew up in — a genuinely different experience from a guide assigned from a larger agency roster, since the route and pacing reflect his own lifelong familiarity with the place rather than a standardized script.
Much of that familiarity shows in how the tour treats Sintra's historic center itself, not just its hilltop palaces. The town's colorful mansions and narrow streets sit in the shadow of the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, the oldest royal palace still standing in Portugal, parts of which are believed to date back to the 10th or 11th century under Moorish rule. After Sintra was taken by Christian forces in 1147, King John I ordered a major rebuilding of the palace in 1385, and King Manuel I expanded it further between 1497 and 1530 using wealth from Portugal's Age of Discoveries. Its two enormous conical kitchen chimneys, rising high above the rooftops, are the single most recognizable silhouette in the town — the Portuguese royal court used the palace for centuries as a favored summer retreat, partly to escape outbreaks of plague in Lisbon.
A half-day with a guide this locally rooted tends to spend real time in these older, quieter corners of the historic center — not just the better-known hilltop estates — which is part of why this tour's reviewers consistently mention depth of local knowledge rather than just the headline sights.
