Rua Nova do Carvalho — better known today as Pink Street — has a real, colorful past that long predates its current reputation. Located in Cais do Sodré, an area that takes its name from a 15th-century merchant family with maritime business there, the street served as a genuine sailor-and-red-light district from the 18th century onward, with many of its bars historically named after northern European capitals specifically to draw in sailors fresh off the boats nearby. The street's pavement was actually painted pink between 2011 and 2013 as a deliberate revitalization project, transforming it into the cluster of bars, restaurants, and music venues it's known for today.
Bairro Alto, the night's other real stop, has its own documented path into nightlife. Originally a 16th-century residential district, it gradually attracted newspaper offices through the 19th century, which in turn brought bars to serve journalists working late into the night — and from there, the artists and writers who followed, drawn by cheap rents, cemented its lasting bohemian character. Cars have long been restricted in much of the district, which has only reinforced its identity as a walkable, bar-dense nightlife quarter rather than a drive-through one.
