Nazaré's reputation rests on a genuine string of surfing world records set at Praia do Norte, the beach just below the town's lighthouse. In November 2011, Hawaiian big-wave surfer Garrett McNamara rode a wave estimated at roughly 78 feet (24 meters), putting the spot on the global big-wave map for the first time. Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa went further on 8 November 2017, riding an 80-foot wave that was certified by Guinness World Records as the largest wave ever surfed — a record that still stands. In February 2020, Maya Gabeira set the equivalent women's world record at Nazaré with a wave measuring 73.5 feet (22.4 meters).
The reason these waves form here, and almost nowhere else, is geological. The Nazaré Canyon is the largest underwater canyon in Europe, and its head reaches to within a few meters of the shoreline near Praia do Norte. As Atlantic swell travels up the canyon and meets the sudden shallowing of the seabed, the wave energy is funneled and amplified rather than dispersed — the same mechanism that produces more modest surf elsewhere turns genuinely exceptional here.
Beyond the waves, Nazaré is a real, working fishing town with its own distinct local culture — most visibly the traditional dress once worn by local fisherwomen, a layered skirt sometimes called the "seven skirts," tied to the town's long relationship with the sea. This private day trip gives your group time to take in both sides of Nazaré: the clifftop views over Praia do Norte where the record waves break, and the older streets and harbor below where that fishing heritage is still visible.
