Yes — this stretch of the Tagus, historically known as Restelo, was the real departure point for major Portuguese Age of Discovery voyages, including Vasco da Gama's 1497 expedition to India. About This Tour
A private boat charter for your group only, on a real traditional Portuguese boat, with a genuine welcome drink, departing Belém. This is a private boat charter for your group only, aboard a real traditional Portuguese boat. A genuine welcome drink is included, departing from Belém.
Belém, where this tour departs, is the real starting point of Portugal's Age of Discovery. It was from this stretch of the Tagus, at what was then known as Restelo, that Portuguese fleets set sail on history-changing voyages — including Vasco da Gama's 1497 expedition to India. The Belém Tower that now stands guard over the river came slightly later, built between 1514 and 1520 under King Manuel I both to defend the harbor entrance and to mark that legacy, with Vasco da Gama, Pedro Álvares Cabral, Bartolomeu Dias, and Ferdinand Magellan all genuinely associated with departures from this area of the Tagus.
The Belém Tower was designed by Portuguese architect Francisco de Arruda in the ornate Manueline style, and together with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery — built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's successful voyage — it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, a joint recognition of the two as symbols of Europe's Age of Discoveries.
Your own crossing is a much calmer affair: a private charter on a real traditional Portuguese boat, with a genuine welcome drink to start, sailing out past the very tower that has watched over this river mouth for five centuries.
