The real anchor of this day is Tomar's Convent of Christ, founded in 1160 by Gualdim Pais, grand master of the Knights Templar, as the order's headquarters in Portugal during the Christian Reconquest. Its centerpiece, the 12th-century Charola (Templar rotunda), was modeled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and still shows the polygonal, 16-sided plan typical of the few surviving Templar rotundas in Europe. Over the following five centuries the complex grew to combine Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance work, which is part of why UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1983.
From Tomar the route continues to Óbidos, a walled hill town whose fortifications were first built by the Moors and remain essentially intact today — you can still walk the ramparts over the whitewashed, blue- and yellow-trimmed houses below. The castle itself was commissioned after Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, retook the town from the Moors in 1148, and it later earned the nickname "Town of Queens" from a tradition, begun by King Dinis in 1228, of Portuguese kings gifting Óbidos to their wives.
The day also reaches Nazaré, a historic fishing town perched above dramatic Atlantic cliffs. Beyond the clifftop views and the older quarter of the town, Nazaré sits beside the Nazaré Canyon, the largest underwater canyon in Europe — the same submarine feature responsible for the record-breaking waves that have made Praia do Norte, just below, famous among big-wave surfers worldwide.
