According to Catholic tradition, on 13 May 1917 three shepherd children from the nearby village of Aljustrel — ten-year-old Lúcia dos Santos and her younger cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto — reported seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary while tending their flock at a spot then known as Cova da Iria. They reported five more apparitions on the 13th of each following month through October, with an additional apparition reported on 19 August at nearby Valinhos after the children had been briefly detained by local authorities. This tour visits both of those real, documented locations.
The reports culminated on 13 October 1917, when an estimated 70,000 people gathered at Cova da Iria, many of whom later described witnessing an unusual solar phenomenon that became known as the "Miracle of the Sun." The Catholic Church later recognized the reported apparitions as worthy of belief, without requiring that recognition as an article of faith — this tour presents the events as what they are: a matter of religious tradition and devotion, not a verifiable historical claim, while treating the site's real significance to millions of pilgrims with respect.
That significance is substantial by any measure: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima is today one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, drawing more than six million visitors a year. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, built on the site where the children were tending their flock, now holds the tombs of all three visionaries, and remains the spiritual heart of the sanctuary that this full-day private tour explores at an unhurried pace.
