Évora's historic center was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, and its most visited single attraction is the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos), built onto the Church of St. Francis in the late 16th century by Franciscan monks. Its walls and columns are lined with the bones and skulls of an estimated five thousand people, exhumed from Évora's overcrowded cemeteries at the time. The chapel wasn't built as a curiosity — it's a documented memento mori, a deliberate reminder of mortality, and the inscription over its entrance translates roughly to "We bones that are here, for yours await."
From Évora the tour continues to Monsaraz, a small medieval village set on a hilltop above the Guadiana River, protected by walls and still paved with slate streets and whitewashed houses. The site has been inhabited since prehistory, but its castle dates to after 1167, when it was taken from the Moors and later entrusted to the Knights Templar to help secure the border with Castile — a role the hilltop's commanding views over the valley made it well suited for.
The valley Monsaraz overlooks is now dominated by the Alqueva reservoir, formed when the Alqueva Dam was completed on the Guadiana River in the early 2000s, making it the largest artificial lake in Europe. The wider Évora region is also home to the Cromeleque dos Almendres, a megalithic stone circle of around 95 standing stones whose earliest phase dates to roughly 6000 BC — making it, by current archaeological dating, more than two thousand years older than England's Stonehenge.
