The wider Almada area, which includes Cacilhas, has real evidence of human habitation going back at least 5,000 years, with a Phoenician settlement recorded in the 8th century BCE and the Romans later using it for fishing and fish processing. More recently, the 19th and early 20th centuries saw it become a genuine industrial riverfront built on fish salting, canning, and shipbuilding.

About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, with a real ferry crossing included, to Cacilhas' genuine fishing village. This is a private tour for your group only, with a real ferry crossing genuinely included, to Cacilhas — a genuine fishing village across the Tagus.
Cacilhas is the real waterfront parish of Almada, on the opposite bank of the Tagus from central Lisbon, and the land it sits on has a genuinely long human history — archaeological evidence points to habitation in the wider area for at least 5,000 years, drawn by fertile land and a river full of fish. Phoenicians established a settlement here in the 8th century BCE, and the Romans later used the area for fishing and fish processing, a trade that would define the community for millennia afterward.
The way you'll actually cross the river is on a cacilheiro — the real orange-and-white ferryboats that have carried passengers between Lisbon's Cais do Sodré terminal and Cacilhas for generations, a crossing that takes around 15 minutes and still runs several times an hour throughout the day.
For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Cacilhas riverfront was a genuine working-class industrial district built on cork processing, fish salting and canning, shipbuilding and repair, and the manufacture of fishing nets. That shipbuilding and fishing heritage is still visible in the area's character today, and it's exactly what gives the local food culture — the seafood, in particular — its real, working-port authenticity rather than a tourist-facing imitation of it.
