About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real named wineries in Cheleiros and Bucelas, genuinely distinct from Arrábida/Setúbal. This is a private tour for your group only. Real named wineries in Cheleiros and Bucelas — a genuinely distinct wine region north of Lisbon, separate from the Arrábida/Setúbal region.

Bucelas holds Portugal's only white-wine-exclusive DOC (Denominação de Origem Controlada) designation, a region of under 140 hectares just north of Lisbon where wine has likely been made since Roman times. Its principal grape is Arinto, a variety prized for keeping high acidity even in a warm climate, traditionally blended with small amounts of Esgana Cão. The wine had a genuine moment of international fame centuries ago: Shakespeare referenced it in Henry VI under the name "Charneco," and in the Elizabethan and Victorian eras it was exported to England as "Lisbon Hock," prized there for its resemblance to German Riesling. The region received its formal demarcation in 1911.

Cheleiros, the tour's other stop, is a small village in the same general area north of Lisbon, in the Mafra municipality, with its own smaller-scale winemaking tradition that pairs naturally with Bucelas on a single day trip.
