About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, real stops at Alfama, the genuine Santa Justa lift, Bairro Alto, and Graça viewpoint. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include Alfama, the genuine Santa Justa lift, Bairro Alto, and the Graça viewpoint.
This walking route strings together several of Lisbon's most recognizable sights, moving between Alfama's oldest lanes and the grid-planned streets of the Pombaline Baixa, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake — two neighborhoods that look and feel genuinely different from each other, despite sitting only a short walk apart.
The Santa Justa Lift, one of the stops along the way, is often mistaken for a much older structure because of its ornate ironwork, but it's actually a relatively young addition to the city — built between 1900 and 1902 by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, a student of Gustave Eiffel, and originally powered by steam before being converted to electricity a few years later. It was declared a national monument in 2002.
Bairro Alto and the viewpoint above Graça round out the route with two very different perspectives on the city: Bairro Alto as a dense, historically bohemian neighborhood of narrow streets, and the Graça viewpoint as one of several real miradouros — Lisbon's famous hillside lookout points — that take advantage of the city's uneven, seven-hill topography to offer sweeping views over the rooftops toward the Tagus River.
