The Benagil Caves, the highlight of this long private day trip, are a genuine geological formation in Miocene limestone laid down roughly 20 million years ago and since carved by Atlantic wave action into a network of sea caves along the Algarve coast. The best-known of them, Algar de Benagil, has an unusual circular skylight in its roof — formed over time as rainfall eroded the softer limestone from above until it collapsed through — that floods the cave's hidden interior beach with natural light, an effect locally nicknamed the "Eye of Benagil."
Reaching the caves and the surrounding Algarve towns from Lisbon is a genuinely long undertaking — it's roughly a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive each way — which is why this private tour is scheduled as a full 12-hour day rather than a shorter excursion.
