Las Ventas was designed by architect José Espeliú in the Neo-Mudéjar style — a Moorish-revival look popular in late 19th- and early 20th-century Spain — with an exposed-brick facade decorated in glazed ceramic tiles depicting the coats of arms of every Spanish province. Construction was completed in 1929, though the bullring wasn't officially inaugurated until June 17, 1931, a two-year gap between finishing the building and formally opening it that most visitor accounts gloss over.
With a seating capacity of 23,798, Las Ventas is genuinely the largest bullring in Spain, but it is not, as is sometimes repeated, the largest in the world — by most verified counts it ranks second or third globally, behind larger rings in Mexico and Venezuela. It remains, however, the most prestigious bullring in the sport, and the one every serious matador measures their career against.
Bullfighting's legal status in Spain is genuinely more contested than a simple 'it's legal' summary suggests. The Canary Islands banned it outright in 1991, and Catalonia followed with its own ban in 2010 — only for Spain's Constitutional Court to strike down the Catalan ban in October 2016, ruling 8-3 that regional lawmakers could not prohibit a practice the national parliament had designated part of Spain's protected cultural heritage. Catalan officials said at the time they would not allow bullfighting to resume in the region regardless of the ruling, and it remains banned there in practice today. This tour presents that real, unresolved debate plainly rather than taking a side, alongside the building's genuine architectural and sporting history.
