A 14-day photography-focused journey through Luang Prabang and deep into the mountains of Phongsaly province, working alongside a professional Lao photography guide to capture temple life, the Mekong River, and homestays with the Akha, Hmong, and Pulinoy hill tribes. This entire trip stays within Laos — from Luang Prabang into the remote northern mountains of Phongsaly province and back — with no border crossings.
A private guide, driver, and vehicle for the entire trip, with hotels pre-arranged at every overnight stop — the pace and any optional stops can still be shaped around your group.
Arrival pickup at Luang Prabang International Airport.
Arrive in Luang Prabang and settle in, then meet a local Lao photographer for an afternoon shoot documenting cotton weaving, bamboo weaving, and silk dyeing, finishing with a sunset shoot at Vat Prabat Tai.
An optional dawn outing to photograph monks collecting alms, a walk through the morning market, a landmark shoot around Huean Chan Heritage House and the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, then long-exposure photography at Kuang Si Waterfall.
Drive from Luang Prabang to Nam Kat Yorlapa in Oudomxay, stopping at Ban Na Yang Tai to meet the Lue ethnic tribe along the way.
Visit the sacred Phasingkham Buddha Temple and hot springs near Muang La, then Kok Mai Ngai Village and Aa No Village to photograph Akha culture and textile weaving, and Tauser Village of the Hmong hill tribe.
Drive by 4x4 deeper into the jungle-clad northern mountains to Ban Laosen, the first of a week of homestays with local families across the region's villages and tribes.
A day in Boun Tai talking with local people and photographing daily life, with meals shared at a family house in the village.
Travel to Nong Houm, set among green rice paddies, where the Akha still dress in colorful traditional clothing — rich ground for portrait and lifestyle photography.
A relaxed day in Nong Houm learning about a way of life far removed from the modern world.
Travel to Seng Kang Kao to meet another ethnic tribe with distinctive traditional dress, with mountain scenery along the way.
Continue to Boun Neua, with the option to join local hosts in the fields for farming, harvesting, and foraging.
Travel to the town of Phongsaly for landscape photography and a visit to an ancient tree thought to be over 400 years old.
Drive back by 4x4 to Nam Kat Yorlapa, with the afternoon free to relax by the pool.
Return toward Luang Prabang by minivan, then visit the Pak Ou Caves by boat and cruise the Mekong River back into town.
Transfer to the airport for your departing flight.
The trip ends in Luang Prabang with a transfer to Luang Prabang International Airport for your departure flight.
