About This Tour

A private full-day drive along the old North Yungas Road route down into the subtropical Yungas valley and the town of Coroico — for travelers who want the scenery and the history without mountain biking it.

Coroico became the capital of Nor Yungas Province in 1899 and sits at roughly 1,500 to 1,800 metres, depending on the source. Its first Spanish settlers were drawn by gold, and the Yungas later became a coca and coffee farming zone for the La Paz region.

The Yungas are also home to most of Bolivia's roughly 23,000 Afro-Bolivians, descendants of enslaved Africans brought to work Potosi's mines and later the Yungas haciendas. A saya dance revival, part of a black-consciousness movement in the late twentieth century, is a visible expression of the community's culture today.

Taking the drive instead of the bike ride keeps the history and the scenery while removing the exposure, which suits non-cyclists or anyone travelling with family.
