About This Tour
A deep, private dive into La Paz's Witches' Market — an Andean mural gallery, a traditional textile shop, an Afro-Bolivian coffee tasting, a purification ritual, and a vegetarian Bolivian lunch. The Witches' Market spreads across the streets around Calle Linares in the old quarter, and it has been part of La Paz for a few hundred years. Many of the stalls are run by Aymara women, and the specialists behind the trade are yatiri, traditional healers. The 'witch' label is a tourist-era shorthand rather than the community's own term.
The items that surprise first-time visitors have specific meanings. A dried llama fetus, or sullu, is buried beneath the cornerstone of a new house as a cha'lla, an offering to Pachamama, to protect the building. Sweets, incense and coloured wool can be assembled into a mesa andina, an offering table that is burned for luck in a home or business.
The charango and zampona workshop fits the same worldview: Andean music has long been part of ritual and festival life, not just entertainment. Taking time over each stall, as this slower tour does, lets your guide explain what is actually used for what.
