About This Tour
A private half-day tour on foot through La Paz's historic streets and markets, followed by a Mi Teleférico cable car ride over the city and a visit to the Valle de la Luna badlands.
Mi Teleférico began running on 30 May 2014 with the Red Line, and it was built to take pressure off the congested roads between La Paz and El Alto. It has since grown into one of the largest urban cable car systems in the world, and Guinness recognized it as the world's largest cable car system. Riding it is a quick way to understand La Paz's canyon geography, which the street-level walk can only hint at.
El Alto, at the top of the ride, sits at roughly 4,000 metres and became a city in its own right in 1985. About three quarters of its residents identify as Aymara, and it is often called the Aymara cultural capital. Seeing it after the colonial downtown makes the point that La Paz is really two cities, one above the other.
Down on the cobblestones of Calle Jaen, the colonial layer is easy to read, and the walking route near the Witches' Market follows streets that have been part of the city for a few hundred years. Valle de la Luna then closes the day with a different kind of landscape entirely.
