About This Tour
A private full-day trip combining the Tiwanaku ruins with a stop at Lake Titicaca's shore — a longer day than the standalone Tiwanaku trip, for travelers who want both without a second day trip.
Lake Titicaca sits at about 3,812 metres and covers roughly 8,372 square kilometres, with a maximum depth of about 281 metres. Guinness lists it as the highest commercially navigable lake in the world, a more precise claim than simply 'the highest navigable lake', since smaller lakes sit higher. It is shared between Bolivia and Peru.
That setting explains why Tiwanaku developed where it did. Its builders farmed the Altiplano around the lake and drew resources from the surrounding basin, and the Tiwanaku state flourished for several centuries before the Inca. The site itself is UNESCO-listed, with the Gateway of the Sun and the Kalasasaya courtyard among its best-known features.
Combining the two on one day, as this trip does, makes the link between lake and ruins easy to see, though it is a long day at altitude.
