Overview

A private 3-day version of the Huayna Potosí climb, adding a full extra day at altitude for acclimatization and more thorough ice climbing practice before the summit push — a better option for climbers newer to altitude.

Huayna Potosí is a real technical climb, not a hike — crampons, an ice axe, and a rope are standard equipment. This 3-day version adds a full extra day of acclimatization and ice practice compared to the 2-day climb, which meaningfully improves your odds on summit day for climbers who haven't spent much time at altitude before.

Highlights

  • Day 1 — Acclimatization and lake A drive to the mountain area with a stop at a glacial lake near the base, an easier first day to begin adjusting to the altitude.
  • Day 2 — Base camp and ice climbing practice A hike up to base camp around 17,000 feet, followed by a full, unhurried session practicing ice climbing technique with crampons and an ice axe.
  • Day 3 — Pre-dawn summit push A roped, guided ascent starting well before sunrise toward the 19,974-foot summit, weather and conditions permitting, then the descent and return to La Paz.

About This Tour

A private 3-day version of the Huayna Potosí climb, adding a full extra day at altitude for acclimatization and more thorough ice climbing practice before the summit push — a better option for climbers newer to altitude. Huayna Potosí is a real technical climb, not a hike — crampons, an ice axe, and a rope are standard equipment. This 3-day version adds a full extra day of acclimatization and ice practice compared to the 2-day climb, which meaningfully improves your odds on summit day for climbers who haven't spent much time at altitude before.

This version adds a first day at lower altitude, usually at a glacial lake near the mountain's base, before the base-camp and ice-practice day. That extra night in the mountains gives the body more time to adjust before the 6,088-metre summit attempt.

Huayna Potosi was first climbed by its normal route in 1919 by Rudolf Dienst and a companion, whom sources name as Adolf Schulze or O. Lohse. It sits about 25 kilometres north of La Paz in the Cordillera Real, and around a thousand people summit it each year.

A summit is never assured. Weather, snow conditions and how each climber feels all play a part, and a good guide will turn around safely when it is wise, however close the top may be.
