About This Tour

A private full-day trip from La Paz to the lakeside town of Copacabana and, by boat, Isla del Sol — the island Inca mythology names as the birthplace of the sun.

Copacabana's shrine goes back to around 1576, when the Indigenous sculptor Francisco Tito Yupanqui carved the image of Our Lady of Copacabana. It was enthroned in an adobe church on 2 February 1583, making it one of the oldest Marian sanctuaries in the Americas. The present basilica was begun in 1668 and completed in 1805, and the hillside had previously been associated with Inca worship.

Isla del Sol covers about 14 square kilometres. According to the chronicler Bernabe Cobo, the first Inca, Manco Capac, emerged from a crag on the island's northern side known as Titi Qala, a legend tied to the sun's emergence over the lake. It is told as myth, not history, though the island was a major pre-Columbian ritual centre.

On the southern slope, a flight of about 206 stone steps climbs to a spring whose three streams are linked in local tradition to the Inca moral code: don't be lazy, don't lie, don't steal. The steps are Inca-built and the 'fountain of youth' label is a popular tradition.
