Overview

A private half-to-full-day tour through downtown La Paz — Plaza Murillo, San Francisco Church, the Witches' Market, and the otherworldly Valle de la Luna badlands on the city's edge.

This is a private, customizable route — your guide adjusts the pace and can add or drop stops based on your interests, rather than following a fixed group schedule.

Highlights

  • Plaza Murillo La Paz's central square, named for independence martyr Pedro Domingo Murillo, ringed by the Palacio Quemado (Presidential Palace), the Legislative Assembly, and the Metropolitan Cathedral.
  • San Francisco Church A 16th-century church rebuilt in the 1700s with an Andean Baroque facade — carved pumas and native plant motifs worked in alongside Catholic imagery.
  • Witches' Market Stalls along Calle Linares selling herbal remedies, amulets, and dried llama fetuses used in Aymara offerings to Pachamama, the earth goddess.
  • San Pedro Plaza A drive-by view of the exterior of San Pedro Prison from the plaza — Bolivia's best-known (and long since closed to visitors) prison, seen from outside only.
  • Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) A badlands landscape on La Paz's southern edge, its clay spires carved by wind and rain into a maze that resembles a lunar surface.

About This Tour

A private half-to-full-day tour through downtown La Paz — Plaza Murillo, San Francisco Church, the Witches' Market, and the otherworldly Valle de la Luna badlands on the city's edge. This is a private, customizable route — your guide adjusts the pace and can add or drop stops based on your interests, rather than following a fixed group schedule.

Plaza Murillo carries a nickname that tells you how La Paz politics has often gone. The Palacio Quemado, the 'Burned Palace', got its name after 20 March 1875, when opponents who could not storm the presidential building threw flaming torches at it from the cathedral across the square. The building was rebuilt, but the name stuck, and the plaza still sits beside the Legislative Assembly and the cathedral.

San Francisco Church shows how colonial builders and Aymara and Quechua craftsmen met halfway. Its first church collapsed under heavy snowfall in the early 1600s, and the present building began around 1743-44. The carved stone facade, finished around 1790, is a textbook example of mestizo Baroque, with masked figures, snakes and tropical birds worked in among Christian imagery.

Valle de la Luna, in the Mallasa area on the city's southern edge, is not rock in the usual sense. It is hard clay with varied mineral content, which erodes at different rates and leaves a maze of spires and gullies at about 3,650 metres. Because the route is private and customizable, your guide can reorder these stops around your energy at altitude.
