La Paz's General Cemetery is a working cemetery whose walls and niches have become one of the city's best-known open-air galleries. Muralists keep adding and repainting, so the art you see on the day is partly a snapshot. Guides usually frame it as a living part of how the city talks about memory, and visitors are expected to treat the grounds with respect, as families are visiting.
El Alto, reached by cable car, was only made a city separate from La Paz in 1985, yet it now ranks among Bolivia's largest, with a population over 900,000 and a majority Aymara identity. The yatiri you meet there is part of a tradition that long predates the city: the Aymara healer reads coca leaves to answer personal questions.
The El Alto Witches' Market is a more local counterpart to the tourist-facing stalls in central La Paz. Llama fetuses, called sullu in Aymara, are traditionally buried beneath new building foundations as a cha'lla, an offering to Pachamama, and vendors there serve neighbours as much as visitors.
