Kings Canyon National Park was created in 1940 when General Grant National Park, established in 1890, was expanded into it. Most of the park is high-country wilderness reached only on foot, but the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, the roughly 50 miles of Highway 180 from Grant Grove Village down to Roads End, takes you into the canyon itself.
The canyon is often called one of the deepest in North America, with some descriptions claiming it is the deepest in the United States, a ranking that depends on how depth is measured and is disputed. The drive passes Cedar Grove Village and ends at Roads End, where the Kings River and Muir Rock are a short walk away.
The byway section beyond Hume Lake Road closes for winter, typically from early to mid November until around May, so a full day exploring the canyon is a seasonal choice.
