Waterford Crystal is the real craft-history anchor of this tour. Founded in 1783 by brothers William and George Penrose on land by the city's Merchants' Quay, the original factory built a genuine international reputation for the clarity of its cut glass before financial pressures forced it to close in 1853. The name and craft were revived in 1947 by two Czech glassmakers, and the modern factory and showroom you'll visit still practice the same hand-cutting and blowing techniques that made the brand famous in the first place.
Kilkenny Castle itself traces back to the Anglo-Norman conquest, with the first stone castle on the site completed in the early 13th century under William Marshal's direction. The Butler family bought the castle in 1391 and held it for more than five centuries, shaping both the building and much of Kilkenny's own history along the way.
