The Naramata Bench is a roughly 19-kilometre strip along the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake just north of Penticton. The town of Naramata was founded in 1907 by John Moore Robinson, who planted some of the area's first orchards. Table grapes followed in the 1970s, and from the 1980s plantings of European wine grapes began, so the Bench is a relatively young wine region on top of an older fruit-growing one.
It now has its own sub-geographical indication and well over 50 wineries. Hillside joined Wild Goose and Lang as one of the first farm-gate wineries in the province in 1989, while Elephant Island is known for fruit wines made from the area's orchard crops. Deep Roots sits on the clay bluffs directly above the lake.
Wines here are shaped by the steep, lake-facing slopes and the narrow pocket of land between the water and the hills, which makes the Bench a good contrast to the flatter Golden Mile south of it.
