About This Tour

A private day trip from Kamloops to the Secʷépemc Museum and Heritage Park and the BC Wildlife Park, with real Indigenous history, riverside viewpoints along the South Thompson River, and native BC wildlife.

The Secwépemc Museum and Heritage Park sits on about five hectares beside the South Thompson River and includes the archaeological remains of a winter village roughly 2,000 years old, with reconstructed kekulis, the earth-roofed pit houses the Secwépemc used in winter. The museum first opened in 1982 in a building that had been part of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, a history that the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc nation does not hide and which shapes how visitors are asked to approach the site.

The residential school operated from 1890 to 1978 and was, at its peak, the largest in Canada. In 2025 the former school was designated a national historic site. Treat the visit as a chance to listen to Secwépemc voices on their own land rather than as a sightseeing stop.

The BC Wildlife Park, a non-profit rescue and rehabilitation centre, opened to the public in August 1966 on land donated by Molson Breweries. Its exhibits focus on native BC species such as bears, wolves, cougars and birds of prey, many of them animals that could not be returned to the wild.
